Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle crossed the far north Queensland coast this morning as a category 4 storm between Lockhart River and Coen.
The system has since weakened to a weakened into a category 3 storm.
However residents are being warned not to be complacent as it moves west over the Cape York Peninsula today.
The system will continue to weaken but it will remain a tropical cyclone. Narelle will then continue to move west across the Gulf of Carpentaria.
The cyclone is expected to strengthen again to a severe tropical cyclone before impacting the eastern Northern Territory from late tomorrow.
